Trade dashboard methodology

This methodology describes the seafood trade dashboard featured on the “Our Shared Seas” Data Portal.

Data source

The data sources used were: a) FAO FishStatJ for wild capture and aquaculture landings, and b) bilateral trade data was sourced from Trade Map, a data portal owned and copywritten by the International Trade Centre (ITC).

Dashboard purpose

This dashboard was initially created by CEA Consulting (CEA) in 2016 to inform strategy and direction for the Oceans and Seafood Markets Initiative at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

It was not originally intended to be a comprehensive database, and as such, there are limitations to the methodology. For example, the dashboard includes the top 51 seafood importing countries and their top 25 to 50 bilateral trading partners. With this level of overall data coverage, the dashboard includes 90% of global seafood trade by volume.

CEA manually created “commodity” groupings based on 6-digit Harmonized System (HS) codes, a system which is developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO).

The most recent year upon which this analysis is based is 2015.
