This year, Our Shared Seas, in partnership with Oceans 5, is producing a series of Issue Briefs to investigate the dynamic world of sustainable financing in marine conservation. Each brief will provide an accessible summary of a different financing or risk-reduction mechanism, including definitions, strengths and weaknesses, and brief examples of where these instruments have been implemented on the ground. Our hope is to provide a resource that can help increase awareness and understanding of the opportunities and limitations of these tools and we welcome your feedback on how we can continue to evolve this series to be of greatest value to the ocean conservation community.
In our first installment, we focus on blue bonds. The Issue Brief provides an overview of the different types of blue bonds, their unique roles in sustainable ocean financing, what challenges the blue bond industry faces, and what philanthropy can do to accelerate the industry’s growth.
