Description:

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is the lead agency for celebrating the Year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations (UN) system. IYAFA 2022 is an important recognition of the millions of small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers who provide healthy and nutritious food to billions of people and contribute to achieving Zero Hunger. IYAFA 2022 will stimulate actions aimed at supporting the achievement of a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda 2030. IYAFA 2022 will draw attention to the contributions that small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture already make to the SDGs, in particular SDG 14.b, with a view to channel strong political commitment at national, regional, and global levels to further establish supportive measures intended for small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture.
