The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5)

Dates:

February 28, 2022

–March 2, 2022

Location:

Online and in Nairobi

Description:

The fifth session of the UNEA is focused on “strengthening actions for nature to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. One such action is expected to be around marine plastic pollution—a high-profile problem that permeates all parts of the ocean. During an open town hall in June 2021, hosted by the Global Partnership on Marine Litter and the UN Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment, many participants agreed that a legally binding treaty on marine plastic litter and microplastics should be introduced during UNEA-5. This treaty could take into account the entire lifecycle of plastics and offer solutions and incentives through technical assistance and financial support.
